MSBCA CONTRIBUTES TO NCST

Leaders of Maryland’s school transportation industry met along with 47 other states at the 17th National Congress on School Transportation (NCST) in Des Moines, Iowa in May.

The mission of the Congress is to bring together industry leaders every five years to discuss national specifications on school transportation.

Maryland’s delegation included Gabriel Rose, Chair, MSDE; McKandy Gayle, Co-Chair, MDOT/MVA; Cathy Bendis, Harford Co PS; Mike Groff, Baltimore Co PS; Jason Tonkis, Charles Co; Bryan Johnson, Frederick Co; and Steve Nelson, MSBCA President/Harford Co.

Based on 12 topics, 129 proposals were discussed and passed with numerous amendments. Each state was given one vote. While the Maryland delegation was in agreement on a majority of the votes, there were three items that they were not in agreement upon. These included electric stability control, child find, and auxiliary step requirements.

Steve Nelson will present a review of this engaging event at next MSBCA Summer Meeting on May 31.
